Environmental Health Practitioner Intern (2-Year Contract)

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) certificate.

  • Relevant tertiary qualification, preferably a National Diploma or B-Tech Degree in Environmental Health.

  • Must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

  • Computer literacy in MS Office applications.

  • A valid driver’s license.

  • Applicants must be unemployed and reside within the Nkangala District Municipality.

 

Experience

  • Must be a recent graduate, able to gain practical experience within a reasonable timeframe.

 

Key Responsibilities

The intern will assist with various environmental health activities within the local jurisdiction, including:

  • Inspecting specific premises such as undertakings, offensive trades, hair salons, entertainment venues, resorts, childcare facilities, and hostels.

  • Compiling monthly Municipal Health Services (MHS) reports.

  • Conducting general inspections of residential and business premises in response to environmental health-related complaints.

  • Performing routine monitoring and sampling of water sources.

  • Enforcing Municipal Health Services by-laws and relevant legislation.

  • Leading environmental education and awareness initiatives in the community.

  • Investigating noise complaints and monitoring noise levels.

  • Preparing and serving official notices, letters, and reports in line with environmental health legislation.

  • Inspecting food premises for compliance.

  • Monitoring waste management practices in the local area.

  • Overseeing exhumation, reburial, or proper disposal of human remains.

  • Reviewing building plans and providing feedback from an environmental health perspective.

  • Delivering health education during inspections.

  • Investigating foodborne disease outbreaks, infections, and poisonings.
