Internship – Laboratory Assistants

About the Role
The SAMRC Unit and the SARChI in Phytomedicine at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) are offering full-time internships (40 hours per week) for Life Science graduates interested in gaining hands-on laboratory research experience. These positions are ideal for graduates aiming to expand their practical skills and contribute to research projects. The interns will report to the Research Chair and Director and provide essential support to the research team for a period of 12 months.
Key Responsibilities

Assist postgraduate students, technical staff, and research staff with specific experimental techniques and operation of specialized laboratory equipment.

Manage the inventory of laboratory reagents and consumables.

Report and follow up on issues related to electrical, computer, or plumbing systems with the Technical Services Department.

Initiate purchase orders in line with the research group’s procurement procedures.

Maintain laboratory tidiness and ensure compliance with safety standards, including proper disposal of chemical and biohazardous waste.

Accurately record and store plant materials and voucher specimens, maintaining up-to-date logs.

Monitor laboratory equipment to ensure optimal operation and schedule routine maintenance.

Perform other duties as required by the Research Chair or Senior Analysts.
Minimum Requirements

Postgraduate Diploma or Honours degree (NQF Level 8) in Life Sciences, Health Sciences, or a related field such as Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, or Molecular Biology.

A Master’s degree is an added advantage.

Prior experience with chromatography, mass spectrometry, or extraction procedures is advantageous.

Required Skills and Competencies

At least 1 year of laboratory experience.

Knowledge of handling chemical substances and adherence to safe laboratory practices and health and safety regulations.

High technical competence and the ability to manage multiple tasks.

Experience operating specialized laboratory equipment that may require specific training.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

Effective communication, training, and computer skills.
-
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
